Q3 2024 Newsletter: On Ageism Awareness Day

Today is Ageism Awareness Day. To honor this important topic, our Managing Partner and Co-Founder Abby Miller Levy published an op-ed in Fast Company titled: “You’re probably ageist. Here are 4 reasons you should care - and how you can change”. We highly recommend a full read to understand the prevalence of ageism in the workplace, media, marketing, and daily interactions, with actionable recommendations.

Abby writes about self-directed ageism: “This is our own fear of aging validated by societal norms and media messaging that creates ageist attitudes within us. If you’ve ever said “I’m too old for this” or laughed off a lapse in memory by saying “I’m having a senior moment,” then you are guilty of being ageist toward yourself.” The article then highlights why it is self-benefiting to address our unconscious age bias, and steps we each can take to change.

We at Primetime see many opportunities to reframe the conversation from aging to focus on life stages, and applaud the many role models in our own field of entrepreneurship. Alan, who turns 90 this month, founded Primetime with Abby when he was 85. Arianna Huffington launched The Huffington Post at 55 and Thrive Global at age 66. Charles Ranlett Flint founded IBM at 61. Morris Chang founded TSMC at 56. Public dialogue around aging tends to perpetuate negative stereotypes, often framing growing older as a decline rather than the ‘Prime Time’ of one’s life. Together with our portfolio companies, Primetime is working towards healthspan, wealthspan and workspan for all ages.
