📋️ New Recommendations on Aging Well
Don't cut protein to try to live longer — after 65 you need 0.5–0.75 grams per lb a day, and more if you exercise.
A University of Wisconsin review of 350 papers argued protein restriction promotes longevity, and nutrition scientists pushed back hard. For adults over 65, low protein is linked to more frailty, falls, and death; the risk is highest for sedentary people and anyone on GLP-1 drugs, which already accelerate muscle loss.
Get your shingles shot to protect your heart — adults 60+ who got Shingrix had 9% less cardiovascular disease over seven years.
Oxford researchers compared 72,000 matched adults 60 and older and found the Shingrix vaccine was associated with 10% less coronary heart disease, 12% less heart failure, and 12% fewer strokes in men, adding to earlier findings linking the vaccine to lower dementia risk. If you're 50 or older and haven't had the two-dose Shingrix series, ask your doctor or pharmacist about it.
🎯 AgeTech Funding News
Hopscotch just added $53M in funding to help you find a doctor who takes Medicare in rural America.
Hopscotch, a value-based primary-care company built for Medicare patients in rural communities, raised a $53 million Series D. It pairs clinics (today mostly in Western North Carolina) with same-day visits, 24/7 care-team access, virtual care, and in-home support, and will use the money to expand across the rural Southeast.
Network Bio launches with $50M to develop the next drugs for age-related diseases using AI trained on human tissue.
Network Bio launched with $50 million from Section 32, Thiel Bio, Founders Fund, and others, claiming the world's largest patient-tissue training dataset for building disease-specific AI models aimed at personalized medicine across age-related diseases. It's a bet that models grounded in real human biology will out-predict the animal studies that so often fail to translate.
Fashionable hearing aids in eyeglasses and earbuds are coming.
Boston-based Legato emerged from stealth with $12 million from Neotribe Ventures, Listen, and Village Global to launch Legato Frames — eyeglasses with AI hearing assistance built into the arms, aimed at the roughly 37.5 million US adults with hearing trouble, most of whom delay hearing aids because of stigma.

🔬 Longevity Science Breakthroughs
A simple blood test — taken twice — could tell you where your heart is headed after 70.
In 8,454 adults 70 and older with no history of heart disease, researchers measured NT-proBNP — a marker that rises when the heart is under strain — twice, three years apart. People with high or newly high marker readings at both checks had significantly more cardiovascular disease and death over eight years.
A pill that mimics exercise just passed its first human test, with none of the usual GLP-1 stomach trouble.
Enveda's ENV-308, a once-daily pill designed to mimic Lac-Phe (a molecule your body makes during exercise), was tolerated well across all doses in an 88-person first-in-human trial. Participants showed early drops in the hormone leptin, and the planned Phase 2 targets a concern many people 50+ care about: keeping weight and metabolic gains after stopping GLP-1s.

💡 Insights on Consumers Age 50+
Half of pre-retirees and retirees surveyed by LIMRA do not have a retirement financial plan.
LIMRA surveyed 486 pre-retirees aged 45 and up planning to retire within a decade, plus 804 retirees. Eighty-eight percent had thought about how they would generate income — but 50% have no meaningful or recently updated plan, and 76% either have no plan or spent under five hours on it in the past year.
80% of Americans now say the country faces a retirement crisis — up from 67% in 2020.
The National Institute on Retirement Security's new biennial survey of 1,203 adults found 61% are worried they won't reach financial security in retirement, with healthcare costs (91%), inflation (91%), and long-term care costs (89%) as the top-named threats. New this year: 45% are uncomfortable getting financial advice from AI, and 77% call crypto in retirement plans too risky.
Middle-class women reach retirement with $49,000 saved; men have $82,000.
Transamerica Institute's survey of 10,015 adults found the median middle-class household holds $64,000 in retirement accounts, with a wide gender gap. One in three workers expect to retire at 70, or never, yet actual retirees left at a median age of 62-63, and 48% retired sooner than planned.

⚖️ Older American Policy Updates
Medicare now pays your cataract surgeon 20% less than a decade ago.
Medicare now pays surgeons about $520 for standard cataract surgery — down roughly 20% over a decade — and doctors are increasingly steering patients toward laser-assisted surgery and premium lenses Medicare doesn't cover, with out-of-pocket upcharges of $1,000 to $3,000 per eye.
Your Social Security check is on track for its biggest raise in four years for 2027, about $69.75 more per month.
The Senior Citizens League now projects a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, up from the 2.8% received this year (about $69.75 more a month), lifting the average benefit from $1,937.53 to $2,007.28. Nothing is final until Social Security announces it on October 14, because the figure is set by the average CPI-W for July, August, and September, and July's reading came in at 3.4%.
Medicare's new $50-a-month weight-loss drug pilot covers weight loss only.
Medicare's 18-month GLP-1 Bridge pilot offers Wegovy, Zepbound, and oral Foundayo for $50 a month, but only to beneficiaries using them purely for weight loss. Anyone with a condition the drugs are FDA-approved to treat is routed back to their Part D plan's far higher copays. KFF estimates 3.8 million people qualify while roughly 5.9 million with qualifying conditions are excluded.
